As demand for electricity grows, the United States will need to find new ways to produce energy.  At the moment, US energy production is not enough to meet future demand, but there are steps the country can take to maximize production and efficiency.

In 2023, the United States used 4,049 terawatt hours of energy.  Transportation used 37% of the total energy.  The industrial sector, such as manufacturing, agriculture and mining, used another 35%.

However, the US will need a minimum of 5,178 terawatt hours by 2050.  One reason for the increased demand is the rise of AI.  Each AI server request requires roughly 8 watt-hours of energy, which is around 23 times the energy of a regular internet search.  AI usage is only expected to increase, and with it, electricity demands

Another variable behind increasing energy use is the rise of electric vehicles.  Experts predict that rapidly adopting electric vehicles could add an extra 100 to 185 terawatt hours to the US’s national electricity demand by 2030.

There are serious consequences if energy demand isn’t met.  Without power, fuel can’t get pumped on demand.  Communication networks could be shut down, and supply chains can stall.  This would lead to major disruptions in transportation, information access and the distribution of necessities such as food and medicine.

The United States faces challenges in improving its energy infrastructure.  For one, replacement costs are high; replacing the entire US grid would cost close to $5 trillion.  The US also experiences long lead times for buyers of generators and power transformers.

However, all hope is not lost.  There are actions that the United States can take to increase its energy production.  Exploring alternative power sources will be important.  The government hopes to quadruple nuclear energy by 2050, opening up new avenues of energy generation.  Speeding up interconnection queues can also make a huge difference.

As energy usage continues to increase, the United States will need to keep up.  Improving infrastructure and tapping into new energy sources will be key in the coming decades.
