A new cybersecurity facility is set to open at The Berkshire Innovation Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, thanks to a $735,000 earmark secured by U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal. This facility will serve as the next phase of the center’s Manufacturing Academy, aiming to bridge technical knowledge gaps for local suppliers and larger manufacturers.
The hub will offer threat monitoring, detection, and response services specifically for manufacturing facilities. Its primary focus will be on supply chain companies that support the defense industrial base. The initiative also aims to bolster workforce development for local industries and municipalities.
The Berkshire Innovation Center, which opened in 2020, operates a 20,000-square-foot facility in Pittsfield. It provides regional manufacturers and STEM businesses with access to research equipment, training labs, research collaborations, and apprenticeship programs. U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal announced the funding during an event attended by Pittsfield Mayor Peter Marchetti, center officials, and local business leaders.

“Today is a great day for the City of Pittsfield, as we welcome the news that The Berkshire Innovation Center will be expanding its capabilities with the help of a $735,000 earmark I was proud to secure,” Neal stated. He emphasized the widespread nature of cybersecurity threats, affecting local governments, educational institutions, and water systems. “With the establishment of the Cybersecurity Learning and Testing Facility, the BIC will be able to prepare the next generation of our skilled workforce by providing meaningful hands-on training, ensuring our communities have the resources needed to protect critical infrastructure and safeguard public services.”
Navigating Complex Security Guidelines
The center is collaborating with technology providers and companies, including General Dynamics and Synagex. These partnerships are intended to assist area businesses in navigating federal security guidelines. Ben Sosne, executive director for The Berkshire Innovation Center, highlighted the increasing regulatory challenges faced by local suppliers.
“Congressman Neal has been a tremendous partner to the BIC and his support is helping us address a growing challenge facing manufacturers across our region,” Sosne said. “Cybersecurity requirements are becoming increasingly complex, particularly for companies in the defense supply chain. Our goal is to bring together manufacturers, technology providers and partners like General Dynamics and Synagex to help companies navigate these requirements and take practical steps forward. This is an opportunity to build something meaningful in Western Massachusetts that helps our manufacturers compete and grow.”

The $735,000 allocation was secured through U.S. Department of Commerce Congressionally Directed Spending. This funding is part of the Fiscal Year 2026 federal spending bill. Guidelines from the House and Senate Appropriations Committees limited Fiscal Year 2026 Congressionally Directed Spending requests to state and local governments and eligible non-profit entities.
This cybersecurity facility funding represents one of 15 requests submitted by Neal for initiatives within the First Congressional District of Massachusetts. The new facility is expected to enhance the region’s cybersecurity defenses and support its manufacturing sector. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to address evolving digital threats and bolster workforce preparedness in critical infrastructure protection.
The establishment of this facility underscores the growing importance of cybersecurity for businesses of all sizes, particularly those involved in sensitive supply chains. It aims to provide tangible resources and training to help companies meet stringent federal requirements and protect against sophisticated cyberattacks.
The center’s expansion into cybersecurity learning and testing is a direct response to the increasing complexity of digital threats. By fostering collaboration between manufacturers, technology providers, and government representatives, the initiative seeks to create a more resilient and secure industrial base in Western Massachusetts. This development is part of a larger trend where organizations are turning to specialized facilities for advanced cybersecurity solutions, as seen in the ongoing discussions around evolving digital threats.
The project also contributes to the ongoing efforts to strengthen the local economy by equipping the workforce with in-demand cybersecurity skills. This focus on workforce development is crucial for ensuring that local businesses can not only meet current security standards but also adapt to future challenges in the cybersecurity landscape. The Berkshire Innovation Center’s role in this endeavor highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing critical infrastructure needs.
The center is dedicated to providing practical, hands-on training that prepares individuals for careers in cybersecurity. This approach is vital for building a robust talent pipeline that can support both public and private sector organizations. The new facility’s capabilities will extend to offering services that help businesses proactively identify and mitigate risks, thereby safeguarding their operations and data.
This investment in cybersecurity infrastructure is anticipated to have a significant positive impact on the region’s economic competitiveness and security. By providing a dedicated space for learning, testing, and threat response, The Berkshire Innovation Center is positioning itself as a key player in the fight against cybercrime and a vital resource for the local manufacturing community. The center’s commitment to addressing these complex issues is a proactive step towards ensuring the safety and stability of critical services and infrastructure.
