Databricks and Cal Athletics announced a multi-year partnership naming the football venue Databricks Field at California Memorial Stadium. The agreement also makes Databricks the Official Enterprise Data + AI platform for Cal Athletics.
The September 24 announcement described the agreement as the largest partnership in Cal Athletics history. It marks the data and AI company’s first collegiate athletics sponsorship.
Databricks Partnership Funded Through University Shareholding
According to the company’s announcement, UC Berkeley becoming a shareholder in Databricks will fund the partnership. Learfield facilitated the agreement through its Cal Bears Sports Properties team and commercial partnerships group.

The arrangement connects the company with the university where its founders developed their early research. The company said its co-founders still teach at UC Berkeley.
Research conducted at Berkeley between 2009 and 2013 produced techniques for processing data at massive scale. Those results led to Apache Spark, the open source software product.
The company said Spark is now downloaded billions of times per year. The company has expanded beyond Spark to offer data and AI infrastructure used by more than 20,000 organizations.

Related Berkeley technology reporting covers the AI-powered local laws database. That research project is separate from the athletics agreement.
Databricks Branding Extends Beyond The Football Field
The announcement set September 25 for a midfield logo debut during Cal’s nationally televised home game against Clemson. ESPN was scheduled to carry that game at 7:30 PM PDT.
The company also scheduled helmet logo decals for the October 3, 2026 game against UNLV. The release described that placement as the ACC’s first brand partnership including helmet branding.
The agreement additionally renames the former Stadium Club as the Databricks Club. The announcement described the club as a premium, all-inclusive gameday option for Golden Bear fans.
At Haas Pavilion, the company plans high-visibility LED signage during home competitions. The listed sports include basketball, volleyball and gymnastics.
Kim Damron, Learfield’s President of Sports Properties, said the agreement packages several assets reaching fans across multiple sports. Damron described the partnership as connecting the brand with the institution where Databricks began.
Company Leaders Describe An Investment In Berkeley
UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons welcomed the continued engagement of campus community members. Lyons called Databricks an innovative firm born on the Berkeley campus.
Ali Ghodsi, the company’s co-founder and CEO, described the company’s founders arriving as academics. Ghodsi said they believed data and AI would transform every organization.
“Berkeley taught us to think bigger than anyone thought was reasonable,” Ghodsi said.
Ghodsi described the field naming as an investment back into the Berkeley community. The CEO also called it a bet on the next generation of founders, researchers and builders.
Databricks Describes Its Data And AI Platform
The company says its platform brings data, analytics and AI together. Its announcement identified context, control, cost and choice as barriers that can stall enterprise AI.
For broader AI coverage, related reporting examines AI access to company systems and decentralized AI data control.
The company said 100+ sports organizations use its platform. Under the new partnership, the company’s planned presence extends across Cal football and home competitions at Haas Pavilion.
